I
don’t think that there are any dominance-based mountain lists for the UK so I
thought that I’d compile one. My
criteria for a summit’s inclusion are –
- be located in the UK or any of
the UK’s Crown Dependencies
- have its summit at or above 2000
feet
- have a dominance of at least
50%
These
criteria are purely arbitrary but I do have some reasons for their definitions.
I’ve
chosen the UK because I am a UK citizen; it’s my country! And Northern Ireland isn’t generally included
in any lists except those specific to the island of Ireland. I’ve included the Crown Dependencies (the
Channel Islands and the Isle of Man) because I didn’t want to exclude Snaefell!
I’ve
chosen 2000 feet as the minimum summit height as this seems to be the accepted
point at which a hill becomes a mountain, as I’ve explained in my previous
“What is a Mountain?” blog.
50%
is the most arbitrary of the criteria. I
had to pick a figure and I thought that any mountain with a prominence of at
least half of its height would be worthy of inclusion.
You
might think that it would take quite some effort to compile the resulting list,
but the required data is freely available on the Database of British and Irish
Hills. It took me less than half an hour
to compile the list with a little bit of spreadsheet trickery.
There
are 245 mountains on the list according to the DoBIH version 15.5 data. All but three of them are already classified
as a Munro, Corbett, Graham or Nuttall and all of them are Marilyns which means
there’s a fair chance that somebody has already completed the list. My progress is not that impressive, I’ve
managed to tick only 35.
Here
are the 245.
